The first state witness in the trial against Prof. Gilbert Bukenya over the CHOGM car deal has exonerated the former Vice President of any wrong doing.
Prof. Gilbert Bukenya and the directors of Motor Care Uganda Klaus Karstensein and Per Lundgren face charges of abuse of office and fraudulent practice.
They are accused of conniving to fraudulently award Motor Care Uganda Limited the contract to supply police outrider motorcycles ahead of the Common Wealth Heads of Government Meeting in 2007.
The witness George William Okurut, a commissioner with the works ministry has told court that Bukenya had nothing to do with the awarding of the contract.
He says the contract for supply of motor vehicles and motor cycles was awarded by the sub-committee on which he sat as engineer.
Okurut says prof. Bukenya was not part of the procurement process which he says was conducted according to the law.
He however told court that the consignment from Germany was not inspected before being shipped to Uganda.
He said he travelled to Germany to conduct the inspection only to be told that the consignment was already being shipped to Kampala.
Isaac Kyamutai, a customs officer with Uganda Revenue Authority comfirmed receipt of the motorcycles as they were brought into the country.
