The Industrial Court has declared the ongoing strike by the teaching staff at Makerere University illegal because they did not comply with the set legal procedure to notify their employer of their intended industrial action.

According to the ruling by the Kampala Capital city Authority (KCCA), Kawempe Kawempe Division Labour Officer,  Ruth Kulabako, the instituted disciplinary proceedings by the respondent against the complainants is justified and claims of discrimination lack merit.

According to the ruling sheet,  Kulabako said that Makerere University Council, the employer of the complainant has never received or been served with a formal notification of an intended industrial action.

She says that the alleged industrial action was therefore not in accordance with the set down procedures.

The very court last week directed Makerere University to half any disciplinary action against striking staff when Deus Kamunyu, chairperson of the academic staff, and others ran to court over the same.
