The High Court in Kampala is set to hear a habeas corpus application filed by Dr. Kizza Besigye and his aide, Hajji Obeid Lutale, today, February 19, 2025. They are seeking their unconditional release from Luzira Prison.

The application, originally scheduled for February 25, was moved forward following negotiations between the concerned parties.

JusticeDarglas Singinza will preside over the hearing.

The application, filed on February 5, 2025, by a team of lawyers led by Erias Lukwago, follows the Supreme Court’s ruling that the Court Martial lacks jurisdiction over civilians. This ruling effectively nullified the charges against Besigye and Lutale, yet they remain remanded.

The advocates are seeking a court order compelling the Attorney General and the Commissioner General of Prisons to explain why Besigye and Lutale remain imprisoned despite the Supreme Court’s ruling, which bars the trial of civilians in military courts.

The two face national security-related charges.
