Election experts have questioned the motive behind a proposal by the Uganda Joint Christian Council to have the 2021 presidential elections postponed for three years to allow the country to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic.
Addressing journalists today, the Council chairman, also the Archbishop for Kampala Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga said number of Covid deaths is skyrocketing, raising fears they could rise further after elections since politicians are not observing the set Standard Operating Procedures.
The religious leaders also propose that the constitution be amended to allow President Museveni to continue ruling during the period of postponement.
However, the Executive Director Citizens’ Coalition for Electoral Democracy in Uganda Charity Ahimbisibwe tells KFM that postponing the elections will lead to a constitutional crisis.
She says the election can go on as long as the public follows the SOPs.
