Weather experts have warned of possible episodic flash floods in some areas leading to loss of lives and destruction of property.

This comes as Uganda National Meteorological Authority forecast for the second major rainfall season indicates that most parts of the country are expected to experience average to suppressed rainfall.

Acting executive director of the Uganda National Meteorological Authority (UNMA) David Elweru says other disasters may arise from possible landslides mostly in mountainous areas of western, South-Western, and Eastern Uganda as well as strong and gusty winds and lightning among others.

He now calls for appropriate measures to be undertaken to avoid loss of life and destruction of infrastructure and property like relocation of communities at high risks and installation of lightning conductors on people’s structures.

Meanwhile, Elweru also advises farmers to do timely planting of improved quick maturing and drought-tolerant crops like Sorghum, millet, and Sim sim and to use the available water sparingly since there is a likelihood of water stress to both crops, pasture, and domestic use.
