The opposition Forum for Democratic Change party has challenged the government to come up with a robust plan to prevent the new covid-19 variant.

The new Omicron variant has since been described as a “variant of concern” as it has a higher re-infection risk.

Addressing journalists at the party headquarters in Najjanankumbi, the FDC deputy spokesperson, John Kikonyogo expressed concern over the new variant that has come at a time when Ugandan medical workers are on strike, something he says could affect its fight.

He has now demanded that the government explains the plan and travel measures they have put in place to avoid importation of the virus.

The minister of health for primary healthcare Margaret Muhanga over the weekend said the government was not considering an Omicron travel ban on Southern African countries.

She instead said the government would increase vaccination uptake and enforcement of Covid preventive SOPs.
