With just 12 days to the Uganda Martyrs celebrations in Namugongo, the first group of pilgrims has made it to the Anglican shrine.

The Chairperson of the Organizing Committee for Uganda Martyrs Day, Rt Rev Reuben Kisembo has told journalists that these pilgrims, from different places and backgrounds, have travelled a long way with faith and determination to be recognized as the first to arrive.

“Although some pilgrims have started arriving, the majority are expected on June 31st”, said Rt Rev Kisembo

One of them is 60-year old Catherine Akuru, who says her resolve to make the journey was not dampened by the recent closure of Karuma Bridge. She explains that she boarded a taxi from Lira to Kigumba where she jointed other foot pilgrims.

The other pilgrims including a one Lawrence Okello and Julius Etenu are however not sure of shelter and source of food and other refreshments to take them through the remaining 12 days.

The annual Martyrs’ Day celebrations are held every June 3rd
