Fishermen have been asked to adjust to the new fishing guidelines and emphasis that lakes are protected.

This come as Fisheries protection unite (FPU) banned the hurry up method (chota-chota) and also confiscated fishing gears including boats and nets from lakes Albert to curb illegal fishing and protect fish from depletion.

John Kiburara, Kikuube District Fisheries Officer, told the Lakers that legal fishing methods help to protect all fish species in the water body.

He said fishermen dealing in silver fish to continue with their licensed business since they are not yet banned.

However, Denis Odaga, who represented the Kyangwali sub-county local government chairman, said that fishermen are facing many challenges in regard to continuous bans of fishing methods.

Odaga urged the government to put more efforts in the fight against insecurity on Lake Albert to strike a blow against attacks from Congolese armed men.

“We are still recovering from the injury which has been put and we have also really cooperated with the FPUS on the water to change, and now the government is also bringing on thing that is  wiping away  the fishing gear which was legal for (mukene) silver fish which has turned to be illegal,” Mr. Odaga said.

Meanwhile Some of the fishermen and women that include Bernad Tugume and Grace Alinaitwe welcomed the operation saying that, it will make the yield enough mukene on lake Albert and on other lakes in the country.
