State Minister for Northern Uganda, Grace Freedom Kwiyucwiny has expressed government’s commitment to holding further consultations with residents occupying the contested Apaa land in Amuru district.

This is after a meeting convened by Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja collapsed after she was forced to flee from angry residents when she announced government’s decision to evict them on May 15, 2023.

Nabbanja noted that Cabinet had resolved to compensate each of the affected people with national IDs Shs10 million in addition to 20 iron sheets and 20 bags of cement while those without would only receive Shs2 million.

Speaking to KFM, Kwiyucwiny admitted that the announcement took residents by surprise adding that many of them had not been fully engaged.

She adds that another meeting happened on Friday amongst government officials to strategize how to handle the matter.

However, the chairperson of the Acholi parliamentary group also Kilak North MP, Anthony Akol has questioned the motive behind the eviction since the president last year banned all land evictions in the country.

“Up to now, I don’t believe that this is President’s directive. For us, we are making all our ways to make sure we reach the president and find out from him. Government is actually acting with impunity. This matter is in court, we have two cases in court on Apaa. We even have have cout injuction of 2012 on the issue of Apaa,” Akol told KFM.
