Makerere University Vice Chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe has said the University is duty bound to contribute towards solving a number of issues to help the country remain stable.

He says some of the key issues that must be addressed include high population growth, climate change, and new emerging diseases among others.

Prof Nawangwe who was speaking at a public lecture at Makerere University Business School as part of Makerere’s 100 years anniversary celebrations said these issues will not be solved by politicians but rather academics though research and innovation

Speaking at the same event, the principal of Makerere University Business School(MUBS) Prof Wasswa Balunywa underscored the need for reforms in the education sector for a better country.

Delivering a key note address at a public lecture as part of Makerere’s 100 years anniversary celebrations held at the main campus in Nakawa, Prof Balunywa said there was need to impart skills in the learners from primary level

He said government must commit to fund sciences right from primary to University and offering free education for all if poverty is to be addressed.

Prof Balunywa also emphasized the importance of MUBS remaining part of Makerere University admitting that his earlier move to have it become an independent university was hinged on  selfish interests.

The public lecture was held under the theme“Leading change in business and management education in the region”
