Mutebi keen on SMC Rally

NRC standings
Susan Muwonge 160 points
Ronald Ssebuguzi 100
Wycliff Bukenya 75
Nasser Mutebi 75
Edson Munghereza 60

Reigning champion Nasser Mutebi is eager to prove his credentials as drivers prepare to zoom off in the Southern Motor Club (SMC) Challenge Rally set for the districts of Rakai and Masaka from tomorrow.

Mutebi won last year’s National Rally Championship (NRC) title without picking a single calendar event win but the MOGAS-sponsored driver plans on making a statement this weekend.

“Last year, it was all about caution. This season, I have a better car (Subaru N8) to compete favourably,” Mutebi told Daily Monitor as he prepared to go route recceing today.

He will come up against fellow homeboy Ponsiano Lwakataka, also in a Subaru N8. The latter had made Masaka a fortress until archrival Ronald Ssebuguzi ended a four-year winning streak during the UMOSPOC Challenge rally in March.

“Ponsiano is beatable. You just have to capitalise on his mistakes,” Mutebi added.

Drivers will be flagged off on Saturday with a Super Special stage at Misaali double circuit. Thereafter, the surviving cars tackle nine competitive sections in the villages of Rakai District on Sunday.

Championship leader Susan Muwonge (Subaru N10), former champion Ahmed Ashraf (Subaru N6), Godfrey Lubega (Subaru N8), Edison Munghereza (Subaru N4) and Godfrey Kiyaga (Subaru N10) will be waiting to pounce. The recent rains in Masaka may also alter the nature of the route.
