The Budadili West MP Nandala Mafabi has been appointed the leader of the opposition in Parliament.

Mafabi beat several others in the race who included Serere Woman MP Alice Alaso, Terego woman MP Kassiano Wadri, Dokolo woman MP Cecilia Ogwal, Bugweri county MP Abdu Katuntu and Patrick Amuriat of Kumi county.

He replaces Prof. Ogenga Latigo who lost the Agago County Parliamentary seat to John Amos Okot of the NRM.

Mafabi has been appointed by the FDC Party President Col. Kizza Besigye, who announced his decision during the party’s National Executive Council meeting this afternoon.

Addressing the media, Party Spokesperson Wafula Oguttu said the decision to appoint Mafabi was made in consultation with the other parties in the opposition.

Wafula says the Kasese Woman MP Winnie Kizza has been appointed the opposition chief whip.

Wafula says the two were chosen because of their loyalty to the party, prefessionalism and the fact that they are not easily compromised, among others.

Speaking shortly after the appointment, Winnie Kizza said she is humbled, adding that she is ready to take on the challenging task.

Nandala Mafabi recently lost the struggle for the Speakership of Parliament to the NRM’s Rebecca Kadaga.

He has come to be known by many for his remarkable perfomance as chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee, where he grilled many government officials over misuse of public funds in the 8th Parliament.
