In what is seen as a significant political shake-up, President Museveni has ordered the replacement of all parliamentary committee chairpersons affiliated with the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).

This is after during a meeting chaired by the President at State House Entebbe last evening, the NRM’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) unanimously resolved to appoint new members to the various sessional committees.

However, the appointment of the parliamentary leadership of the ruling NRM party has been deferred for two weeks to ensure transparency.

As a result, parliament has adjourned once again due to the delayed approval of the parliamentary leadership by the NRM CEC.

Only the chairpersons and vice chairpersons of committees who were appointed last year have been reappointed, while others must reapply.

However, the postponement of parliamentary sittings yesterday drew discontent from a section of opposition legislators, with some saying it is a waste of tax payers’ money.

“If the ruling party has no business to discuss the opposition has business, the speaker should convene the house to allow the opposition to present their matters of national importance”, said Butambala District Woman MP Aisha Kabanda

Meanwhile Opposition Chief Whip, John Baptist Nambeshe said that it was very unfortunate that the sharp differences among the top NRM CEC should not affect the operation of the legislature.

“This to us is a worrying trend of the way parliament i being run, dose it mean if SEC which has s far from all reliable  sources convened for the last four days consecutively and they have failed to arrive at a resolution they have had sharp differences,” Nambeshe said.
