Police say road crashes on Ugandan roads have claimed 87 lives in just a week from 12th to 19th August 2023.
Most fatalities registered, involved motorcycles, leaving 430 other people nursing injuries.
While addressing journalists at the police head offices in Naguru, Michael Kananura the spokesperson for the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety attributed the fatalities to speeding and driving beyond the prescribed speed limit.
“A total number 437 of accidents were registered, out of these 74 were fatal, 224 were serious and 124 were minor. Victims were 428 out of these 87 people died and 341 sustained injuries,” Kananura said in a statement.
He says in an effort to reduce road crashes, they are conducting a joint operation with the Uganda National Roads Authoritytogether with the health ministry dubbed Fika Salama Extra.
Yesterday, road safety activists under their umbrella body, The Road Safety Advocacy Coalition Uganda commended police for resuming operations against drink driving using breathalyzers.
A ban on operations against drink driving was lifted last week and 38 drunk drivers have since been issued with Express Penality Tickets (EPS).
