The Minister for Higher Education, John Chrysostom Muyingo has said that primary and secondary teachers will earn the same salary once the teacher’s policy that was approved by the cabinet is fully implemented.

The policy that was approved by the cabinet in 2019 stipulates that a teacher in the country should have a maximum education qualification of a bachelor’s degree.

According to Muyingo, once the policy is implemented, the government wants teachers to earn a similar salary because they will be having similar qualifications.

Muyingo says most teachers have been preferring to teach secondary section because it pays more money than the primary section, a trend he says will change going forward.

Muyingo meanwhile says they will be able to get bright students joining the profession as opposed to it being looked at as an option for those who fail to get good grades.

Meanwhile, the Acting Commissioner, Teacher/Tutor, Instructor Education and Training (TIET)  Mr Jonathan Kamwana said that the Uganda National Institute of Teachers education is currently developing degree programs that the National teachers and primary teachers colleges will start teaching their learners.
