The Uganda law society president Pheona Wall has demanded accountability of all funds released for covid19 recovery during the lockdown.
Launching the Fourth Quarterly State of the Rule of Law Report, Wall said the greatest injustice Ugandans have faced in the shadow of the covid19 pandemic has been misuse and diversion of resources meant for covid relief.
She tasks the Inspectorate of government, IGG and the auditor general to look into those funds and prosecute the offenders.
She has also demanded that justice is served to those who have lost lives during the November pro Bobi wine protests that saw at least 54 people dead.
Similar calls have been made by the UN Human Rights country representative, Robert Kotchani.
He warns that delayed investigation into the November riots, could have devastating effects.
Speaking at the launch of the law society quarterly report launch, Kotchani said if government does not offer fair justice and compensation to those affected, it could lead to mob justice against security officers.
This he says threatens peace at a crucial time when the country is headed to the polls.
The society’s quarter report findings been characterized by increased election violence, arbitrary arrests of unarmed civilians, violation of the bail rule, brutality on presidential candidates and journalists, inequitable application of covid regulations among others.
The report has also rallied government not to give away Bugoma forest for sugar plantation as a measure to preserve the environment.
