Universities teaching teacher trainees say they have not yet been consulted about the new developments in the teacher policy that takes effect this academic year.
The National Teacher’s policy that was approved in 2019 requires all teachers to attain a bachelor’s degree after four years of study.
Universities that are trainingeachers at the bachelor level for three years will now be required to subject their students to a one-year internship by the Uganda National Teacher’s Council that is yet to be established.
The Vice-Chancellor of Kyambogo University, Prof Eli Kyambogo says that the teachers they have been producing after their three years of study have not been wanting, but if there is a new arrangement, they will wait for guidance from the government.
While the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Makerere University, Prof Umar Kakumba says the government has not yet consulted them about the four years of study for teachers asserting that when contacted, they will give their input.
He is however worried that an additional one year will drive away teachers from the profession.
